Daughter, Know Thyself

This is an entry from one of my good friends Jodie Banson after reading the previous post - please take encouragement from her words.

'Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude.

It does not demand its own way.

It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged.

It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out.

Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance......

When I was a child, I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child. But when I grew up, I put away childish things. Now we see things imperfectly as in a cloudy mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity.

All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely.

'I have paraphrased 1 Corinthians 13 here to suit my purposes - I pray you agree it is not manipulative, but rather economical!

The first part of this paragraph denotes loves perfection and humility. We see how beautiful it is. Yet the oft-overlooked truth is that love is, as you say, still love in the face of adversity- maybe even BECAUSE OF adversity.

You only know the characteristics of something when it's tested: You know your love is patient and kind because it is insulted and taken for granted; You know that your love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude because it humbly forgive and is quick to apologize/forget in order to overcome an unnecessary obstacle.

When given the opportunity, it does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged.Nobody, not even God, said it was easy – but then, in the words of Chris Martin (Coldplay) ‘Nobody said it would be so hard!’

We cannot see the whole picture. As much as we would like to and think it would make life easier, I think it would be like being able to hear people’s thoughts – all those whispers in your head in addition to your own… CHAOS! We could not possibly handle pulling together all the strands of people’s actions, thoughts, feelings, intentions, interpretations, words – it’s too much even on paper! You can’t just move on.

You can’t just go on like you’re okay. Hurt/pain is our body’s way of letting us know that something is wrong. Painkillers/tablets are great – but they don’t solve your problem, they just numb the pain so you can get on and ignore the root cause. You can’t do that with your heart – you gotta take the thorn out.

You can do it slowly, or you can do it fast, but you have to do it.Healing, I have learned, is a funny process. You want it - of course you want it, don't you? You'd be ok if someone would just fix it/medicate it/wrap it up, right? It's not so easy when you gotta do it for you, all by yourself. You're not really alone - God's got your back, but when you have to run from the arm of man, your insecurity and lack of belief in yourself make you easy pickings to the demons of this world that would have you hold on to the safety blanket of your brokenness.

Better the devil you know, huh?As children of the Most High, it is said that if we seek we shall find, if we knock the door will be opened, if we ask, we shall have. Then why, when I’ve asked and prayed so much am I lonely, hurting and sensitive, with a heart that desires that which I cannot or should not have?

All we desire is in the outstretched palm of God – he will withhold from us no good thing, but our faith is the requirement. Imagine a shop filled with every good thing and blessing that you could imagine. All items come with one price tag. £ FAITH. Before the Red Sea parted, Moses had to raise in arms before all Israel and have faith God had a solution. Before the Jordan parted, those carrying the Ark had to step into the river and have faith that God had a solution. Before the woman’s flow of blood stopped, she had to reach out her hand and TOUCH JESUS.

Daughter of God, Sister of Christ – Vessel of his own Holy Spirit, lift your head. All you desire and require is in front of you and unlike the rewards of men; He has not set you a myriad of impossible challenges in order that you prove yourself worthy. He has rather humbled himself and reversed our rightful roles. God has called you a Royal Priesthood and adopted you as his own. The known cliché ‘Physician, heal thyself!’ can be adapted her – ‘Daughter of God, KNOW THYSELF’.

I want to tell you I will pray for you and believe that you can make it out the other side and all the usual sunshine and roses, but I also want to tell you about Job.

Job who cannot have felt like loving when his children, livestock and indeed, his livelihood, were taken from him. Job who must have felt like to worship was the most useless thing to him when the God he had so faithfully served had abandoned him to the wiles of the devil and taken all he had away from him. But he did what he knew to do. And if you flip back to the beginning of the book, you see how God boasted about his servant Job.

Even if you don’t believe you can do it. If you feel alone, dejected, empty, weary wait on the Lord. Isaiah 40:31 tells us that those who trust in the LORD will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.

It is all to His Glory and He is bragging about how sure He is that you can stand the test and take solace in Romans 8:18 (Yet what we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory He will reveal to us later.). Yes, Job lost what he loved, but at the end of the book, God blessed Job in the second half of his life even more than in the beginning!

Ladies, hold on. Someone once told me that you have to get left to go right. Life’s trials stretch us out like elastic bands, but hold on till they let us go. We’re gonna fly like nobody ever imagined a humble elastic band could.
